4 Go-To Photo Locations in Nanaimo for Family & Engagement Sessions
If you’re searching for the best Nanaimo photo locations for your family or engagement session, you’re in the right place. Choosing the right spot can make a huge difference, but it doesn’t need to be complicated.
After years of photographing families, couples, and weddings around Nanaimo, I’ve found a handful of locations I return to again and again. These Nanaimo photo locations are easy to access, photograph beautifully in different seasons, and offer plenty of variety without needing a long hike.
Here are four of my go-to spots, and why they work so well.
1. Westwood Lake - lakeside forest and mountain scenes
Westwood Lake is one of the most versatile Nanaimo photo locations, and for good reason. You get lakeside views, forest trails, sandy beach areas, and even mountain silhouettes, all in one place.
There are beautiful spots within a short walk from the parking lot, so we can focus on capturing connection instead of worrying about logistics. Whether we stay close to the water or head up to the lookout, this location works effortlessly for both family and engagement sessions.
I tend to use Westwood Lake in spring, fall, and winter when it’s quieter, but honestly, a summer evening session splashing in the water would be such a fun vibe.
Why it’s great:
Multiple backdrops: forest, water, trail, and a flat, sandy beach that’s perfect for letting kiddos run and play
Soft, natural light with an earlier golden hour (perfect for families with bedtimes to worry about)
Perfect for relaxed movement, play, and connection
2. Neck Point - ocean, cliffs, and natural texture
If you’re drawn to ocean views, Neck Point is a classic Nanaimo location. Think rocky cliffs, arbutus trees, tall grasses, and tide pools that photograph beautifully in any light.
It’s especially perfect for engagement sessions where you want that West Coast feel without leaving the city. While some paths are a bit uneven, we can easily choose spots that match your comfort level.
Even on overcast days, the textures here make photos feel dynamic and full of depth.
Why it’s great:
Dramatic ocean & cliff views
Beautiful natural light almost anytime of day
Great variety without needing multiple locations
3. Downtown Nanaimo - vibrant waterfront vibes
For a more urban-meets-waterfront feel, downtown Nanaimo is one of my favourite go-tos. The harbour front gives us picturesque water and dock views, while the Old City Quarter offers brick, colourful buildings, and architectural texture that works beautifully for both engagement and family sessions. This area lets us mix landscapes without a long walk between spots, perfect for families who want variety with minimal fuss. The harbour front also gets stunning, soft golden hour light.
Why it’s great:
Urban + waterfront looks in one area
Easy access, lots of visual options
Perfect for storytelling and candid moments
- End your session with an ice cream cone on the docks (or a margarita at Penny’s Palapa)
4. Hemer Provincial Park - peaceful trails and perfect light
Hemer Provincial Park is a quieter, more low-key location that’s ideal for families who want natural forest vibes, open paths, and a relaxed pace. The soft, diffused light under the tree canopy and through marshy trails feels calm and timeless. It’s great for capturing little ones exploring, couples strolling, or candid family moments that don’t feel posed. There’s a big, grassy field with some rolling hills that’s perfect for adding movement to your photos.
Why it’s great:
Forest textures + wide open spaces
Less busy than some of the bigger parks in Nanaimo
Welcomes play, movement, and natural interaction
Whether you’re after beachy & oceanic, forest & lake, urban & lively, or quiet & natural, Nanaimo has spots that work beautifully on camera. As a local photographer, I’m happy to help you choose the best one based on your vision and the vibe you want for your photos.
